HERE AT T&FN WE LIKE TO THINK<\/span> of every one of our monthly offerings as a \u201clandmark
\nissue,\u201d but this one really is special. It represents the 700th edition we\u2019ve published since the first
\none rolled off the presses, dated February 1948. At the risk of dragging your minds away from the
\nimportant current goings-on which have made this one of the more thrilling indoor seasons in
\nrecent memory, let\u2019s take a nostalgic look at the preceding \u201ccentury issues.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"ISSUE 100, MAY 1956. <\/span>Back in the days when the layout was more newspaper-like,\u00a0the front page featured stories on four World Records: Dave Sime with a pair of 220\u00a0straightaway marks (22.2 over the hurdles, 20.1 on the flat), Parry O\u2019Brien with a 61-1\u00a0put and Leamon King\u2019s 9.3 for 100y. King got a picture, as did Jim Bailey for upsetting\u00a0WR holder John Landy in a 3:58.6 mile before 38,543 fans in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"ISSUE 200, SEPTEMBER 1964.<\/span> Ralph Boston made the front page for upping his own\u00a0long jump WR to 27-41\/4 in winning the Olympic Trials, which we somehow covered\u00a0(men only) in a concise 21\/2 pages. Most of the issue was dedicated to a preview of the
\nTokyo Games. Briton Lynn Davies, who would upset Boston and Igor Ter-Ovanesyan\u00a0for the gold, was only picked for 5th place.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"ISSUE 300, II MAY 1971.<\/span> The \u201cDream Mile\u201d lived up to expectations, with Marty
\nLiquori outduelling WR holder Jim Ryun. \u201cJim made it boring by being so good,\u201d said\u00a0Liquori of Ryun\u2019s previous dominance. \u201cMaybe we can make it interesting again.\u201d To\u00a0blunt Ryun\u2019s speed, Liquori went out hard. \u201cI wanted us both sagging in the stretch,\u00a0looking more like boxers,\u201d he said. His strategy worked.<\/p>\n

\"\"ISSUE 400, JANUARY 1978.<\/span> The Athlete Of The Year crown for \u201977 went to Cuba\u2019s\u00a0incredible 400\/800 talent, Alberto Juantorena. It was the second win in a row for El\u00a0Caballo, but it was the closest voting ever as he beat Edwin Moses by only 4 points.\u00a0Moses actually lost a race during the season: that was something that wouldn\u2019t\u00a0happen to him again for another decade.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"ISSUE 500, JUNE 1986.<\/span> Up-front honors went to Texas A&M frosh Randy Barnes. Just\u00a0a 66-91\/2 putter with the 12-pounder a year before, he had exploded to 71-91\/2 with the\u00a016 to replace shot icon Randy Matson as Aggie school record holder. It had been a\u00a0good month for American Records, Joe Dial claiming three in the vault, Jud Logan\u00a0getting a pair in the hammer and JJK upping the heptathlon standard.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"ISSUE 600, NOVEMBER 1994.<\/span> One of the brightest covers ever featured \u201cThe Green\u00a0Machine,\u201d Dennis Mitchell, who had just won the Grand Prix 100 title over Linford\u00a0Christie, Jon Drummond, Frank Fredericks and Donovan Bailey. Interview subject\u00a0Mitchell said, \u201cIt\u2019s our nature as sprinters to be a little cocky, self-centered and to jawflap\u00a0some. It\u2019s all just part of the game.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

IT HAS BEEN MY PLEASURE<\/span> to have worked on no fewer than 437 of our 700 issues (my first\u00a0was January of 1970). Publisher Ed Fox and Associate Editor Jon Hendershott have been around\u00a0for even a few more. Executive Publisher Janet Vitu has been on board since \u201976 and Managing\u00a0Editor Sieg Lindstrom has more than a dozen years of service. The joys of working (Work? This\u00a0is work?) for T&FN can quite easily become a lifetime commitment.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve got a head for figures you may have noticed that the century issues haven\u2019t come at\u00a0exactly regular intervals. For various reasons, during our 56-year life span we\u2019ve had volumes of\u00a011, 12, 17 and 18 issues. Assuming that we continue on in a normal 12-issue mode, Issue 800 will\u00a0roll on by in July of \u201911. And you can expect the super-landmark 1000th issue to come out in \u201928.
